In Germany, there is a tradition of young men (and now women) under the age of 30, who leave home for three years and one day to practice their craft - usually carpentry. It is called auf der Walz, and the young people who embark on this journey dress in traditional clothing and cannot return within 50 kilometers of home or carry a mobile phone during this period.
