Switzerland has always been a popular European destination, especially for the lovers of mountainous landscapes and winter sports, as well as for those conducting business or looking for employment - especially in the financial and business sectors. However, as Switzerland is not part of the EU, moving to the country is not as straightforward as moving to Germany, for example.
For those looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, Switzerland may not be the most attractive destination; it is a very rules-oriented society.
Switzerland is a landlocked country located in Western Europe, divided between the mountains of the Alps and the Central Plateau, bordered by Germany, France, and Italy, among other countries. Switzerland has a history of political neutrality, and is not part of the European Union, although it has treaties with the EU. It is one of the most prosperous countries in the world, is ranked as the most innovative country in Europe, and has a highly competitive economy. The strong economy ensures a high standard of living and Zurich and Geneva are both ranked very high for quality of life. This also means a very low crime rate and a lack of widespread social problems.
While winters can be cold, especially the mountainous regions, and the society is said to be less open to expats and immigrants than some other countries, Switzerland is generally a safe and politically stable place to live, which makes it an ideal destination for many. The diversity of stunning landscapes and climates are perfect not only for the lovers of skiing, but also for those who enjoy hiking, and want to see some beautiful sceneries. Whether you enjoy the nature and rural areas or prefer modern cities, Switzerland can be a perfect location.
If you want to work and settle down in Switzerland permanently, you will need some form of work and residence permit. An agreement between the EU and Switzerland facilitates the entry, residence and employment of EU citizens in Switzerland. Non-EU citizens are finding it increasingly difficult to obtain a work and residence permit.
The unemployment rate is low in Switzerland and the job market is rather flexible. While you might find it harder to find a job as an expat, there are a range of opportunities, especially in the financial and other specialised sectors.
If you are moving to Switzerland with your children, you will also have to consider education options. Switzerland has a number of international schools, or you can also choose a local school, however this will also depend on where you are moving in Switzerland and the predominant language in that area.
Medical care is generally excellent, and all residents are required to purchase basic health insurance.
Living costs in Switzerland are higher than in the UK, and it is usually considered an expensive country. However these additional costs are normally offset by high salaries.

The Zurich tradition of Sechseläuten, where the Böögg (an effigy of a snowman) is burned until the fireworks in his head explode to predict the summer weather
28 April 2014, Zurich
The Basel tradition of Fasnacht (Carnival) kicks off the night before just outside of the city in the town of Liestal with the Chienbäse. Wagons and bundles of fire are paraded through the town and its medieval gates to chase away winter.
9 March 2014
At precisely 4 am in Basel, Fasnacht begins with the Morgestraich - all lights in the city are shut off and a parade of candlelit lanterns begins. Festivities continue each day of Fasnacht, with events for everyone including the children.

After each move, we send a survey to ensure our customers are satisfied. Our customers have rated our removal company as follows:
Absolutely fantastic, could not have asked for better! Very caring as I was a wreck! Giovanni and Amrick.
The service provided was excellent, efficient and nothing was too much trouble. The removals crew (Andy J, Andy L, Cookie & Presto) were absolutely brilliant, everything moved and reconstructed quickly and efficiently, and importantly, without a single scratch, scrape or breakage.
You can't [improve the service]. The lads removing were brilliant. I very rarely meet such good service. Billy and the lads were all really helpful, friendly and courteous. The move was delayed and they had to stay late, on a Friday evening and not one of them complained. I couldn't speak highly enough of them.
Out of a number of similar companies I contacted, the person who answered the phone was by far the most warm, polite and helpful. Although it was one of the most reasonably-priced quotes we had, the main reason for choosing Britannia Bradshaw was that from the very first phone call, we had the sense we could trust your company. When it comes to having your possessions shipped overseas, that trust is more important than small differences in price.
We contacted Britainnia Bradshaw several times before being visited for a quote. Each time, staff were kind and helpful, going out of their way to be helpful and reassuring. They were a main reason we chose to go with Brittania Bradshaw. They were fantastic. It took four people working a very long day to get us packed, moved and unpacked. Even in the final hour, they were hard-working, kind to our children and incredibly professional. Great service, a competitive quote and willing to work with our tight timeframe for a move.
The whole day went very well, we were very impressed how the men moved all our belongings so quick and efficiently, with no breakages or damage to our belongings. The move was far better than we thought it would be. No improvements required by us.
Tony and Andy were both extremely helpful. They were very polite and courteous and made the move less stressful for us. They were so organised and very quickly packed all our belongings into the van with such expertise. Nothing was too much trouble for them.
The team arrived early introduced themselves to me individually. Very efficient and took great care in packing my belongings. Very impressed with their hard work and professionalism. Credit to the company in my opinion based on my experience.
Moving home never stress free. But working with Britannia Bradshaw has ensured that the logics packing, storing and moving were a breeze. Everyone I dealt with was not only professional, but took a real interest in understanding my requirements and meeting them. I couldn't be happier. I'll definitely recommend your services and keep your number to hand - though I do hope I'll have a breather before I need to call you again :)
Spoke to Lynne and she was so helpful as I had been in touch with another local firm who were not good in understanding your needs. Lynne knew all the answers to my questions first class thank you Lynne.
My wife and I have not got words to say what a fantastic crew we had they worked so hard and the professional way that they worked was unbelievable. Nothing was any problem to them and they were a pleasure to have been with on this day, they made this move and took all our stress away from us. We would like you to personally thank the three lads which we had the pleasure of meeting they were : Marcin Niedziela, Julian Jackson, Kamil Lesniak. All were 100% 10 out 10
