Getting settled (resettlement) in Australia

Resettlement in Australia

One of the biggest reasons Brits return from Australia is a lack of preparation for the move. Getting your visa and removal booked is only the beginning. Research, preparation and support for your new life in Australia is key to ensuring that you can settle and truly enjoy your life down under. Prepare yourself for culture shock by becoming aware of the things that are different, the way Australians do things and the general feel of the culture.

What to expect when you arrive in Australia

The warm, sunny weather won't be the only change you encounter when you first arrive in Australia. While they speak English and drive on the same side of the road, to minimise culture shock upon arriving, prepare yourself for some of the significant cultural differences that you'll encounter.

Driving - the same, yet different

On the roads, speeds and distances are measured in kilometres, not in miles. Keep in mind that speed limits and the rules of the road are also different. Prepare yourself by studying the rules of the road for Australia before you leave. You'll also need to find out the rules about driving on a UK licence and converting your UK licence to an Australian one. You may need to take a theory and/or road test to drive in Australia.

Prepare ahead for your banking needs

Well in advance of your departure from the UK, you should arrange a bank account in Australia. This will make your life much easier, as once you're resident in Australia, it is frequently more difficult to establish a bank account. Remember that upon arrival in Australia you will not have a credit history. Having a bank account already set up for you can help build your credit rating. You can even set up your bank account well in advance of your arrival, to further help your credit history. The National Australia Bank has a special migrant bank account, which you may want to investigate.

Education & housing in Australia

The Australian education is very different from the UK. Before you go, consider if the educational system there is the best for your child. Private education is available, but expensive.

Housing is a key part of making your new country feel like home. The Australian rentals market is frequently highly competitive and expensive. Research areas, commuting distances (and traffic during rush hours) and public transportation options. You don't want to find yourself spending 45 minutes in the car to go 5 miles, or so far out in the country that going to work, sending the children to school or just getting a newspaper or litre of milk is very inconvenient.

Get support for your settlement in Australia

Sign up for expat and social groups and playgroups for your children to help you get adjusted. Professional resettlement advice can be worth its weight in gold, and can frequently pay for itself by helping you avoid costly mistakes in your new country.
